Message from Executive Director

Tohoku University, one of the most prestigious universities in Japan, is located in a rather secluded region of Tohoku, from which it took its name. Despite the size and the population of the region it does not have much of tourist traffic, most of the foreign people living in Sendai are young people - students. It is a perfect environment for our organisation - TEDxTohokuUniversity.TEDxTohokuUniversity stands as a group with more than 50 energetic, full of ideas international members of the committee and hundreds of people who have already participated in our events as the audience. It could be said that we are based on the rule of "by students, for students", but here, at TEDxTohokuUniversity, we do our best not only to organise events for the academic society but also to reach out to Citizens, Society and Industries of the Miyagi prefecture, sharing ideas in order of changing this world we live in. We do our best to follow the University's Open Doors policy, welcoming everybody who wants to help us in building a better future.

Thanks to the support of the academia and continuous efforts of the past and current members of the team we were able to create a group shearing new thoughts and ideas, strengthen by the variety of the cultures and nations we all come from. Since 2016, TEDxTohokuUniversity is aimed for the organisation of the events, where international collaboration is just a tool to achieve scientific and cultural progress, creating a platform allowing for the unrestrained flow of new ideas, thoughts and experiences. We are focused on the recently arising worldwide problems, but not forgetting about the struggles of the area where we live - namely the sustainable rebuild and revitalisation of the areas damaged during the Great East Japan Earthquake. I strongly believe that our input towards the well-being of people of Tohoku, or dare I say, mankind, will only continue to grow.

TED and TEDx

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives. At a TED conference, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. Follow TED on Twitter or on Facebook.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
